Shopify deprecated legacy customer accounts on 2026-02-26. Shopify's announcement says a final sunset date will be announced later in 2026. As of 2026-10-10 none of the official pages I checked states one, including the Help Center upgrade guide.
Until then, legacy accounts are unavailable to new stores and to existing stores that are not already using them, and they get no feature updates.
What breaks
Nothing is switched off yet, but the direction is set:
- Apps that rely on legacy account Liquid pages do not work for merchants on the latest customer accounts.
- The legacy Liquid files (
account.liquid,login.liquid,register.liquidand similar) will eventually be locked from editing, then removed. - Storefront API customer mutations will be deprecated. Shopify has not published details.
- Themes in the Theme Store will be required to use the
shopify-accountweb component.
How to check
Merchants. Open Settings, then Customer accounts, in the Shopify admin. If you are on legacy accounts you will see an upgrade banner at the top of the page.
Theme developers. Look for legacy account templates and files in your themes.
App developers. Audit anything that depends on Liquid account pages or on Storefront API customer mutations.
Check whether your store is affected with the store checker.
How to fix
Merchants. Follow the upgrade guide in the Help Center. In short: review your legacy account templates, duplicate your checkout configuration, add app blocks to replace customizations, check brand settings and sender email, publish and test, then click Upgrade under Settings, then Customer accounts. Shopify says you can revert within 30 days.
Theme developers. Remove the legacy files and use the shopify-account web component.
App developers. Build customer account UI extensions.
Custom storefronts. Use the Customer Account API.
Shopify staff said in March 2026 that using a third-party identity provider with the latest customer accounts requires Plus.
